Learning Objective(s):
1. The student will observe the way organisms live and survive in their ecosystem by interacting with the living and non-living elements.
3. The student will predict the effects of changes in ecosystems caused by living organisms, including humans, such as the overpopulation of grazers or the building of highway.

The teacher will introduce the lesson by reviewing the information that they did on Day 1. The teacher briefly tells the students that they will learn how the food web works, that they will use videos to observe
the organisms and how they interact with their environment, they will use an activity
to demonstrate the flow of the food web, also they will learn to predict the affect of changes on an ecosystem.
By placing the dots on the desk it allows the teacher to group the students based on their needs, but to the students it seems random.
The video explains how the food web works, how energy flows throughout it from one animal to the next, as well as define the term 'Food Web'.
After watching the video their is a class discussion over some interesting things that they learned during the video. This gives the students a chance to elaborate on the concept of the food web and all the components of it.

This is just one example of the cups, for the class there will be 3 more different groupings of the animals. The students will have 15 seconds on each round of the game.
After each round the students will "freeze" and the teacher will check their stack.
After the activity is completed there will be a group discussion over what would happen to the web if one of the animals was not there.
The cups are pre-made so the students do not have to worry about purchasing the supplies, this is an important factor for the at-risk student. The cups provide a good visual for the students, this is especially important for the ELL student. It also allows the students to work hands on.

Group Graffiti allows the students to collaborate with one another to come up with ideas to answer the question given. It also allows students the opportunity to discussion the questions and answers as a whole class. The group graffiti also allows students to move around the classroom, this keeps them from becoming restless.
Clickers are a good way to assess the students current knowledge on the topic. Questions are projected onto the smart board and the students use the clickers to answer the questions. This provides the teacher will immediate feedback on the students results.
|
The clicker quiz is in the form of forced-choice questions. Each of the questions have been discussed during this lesson and during Day 1. The quiz is not for a grade, but a way for teachers to assess, at this point during the lesson, what level of understanding the students have on the concept.
|
The lesson is concluded by providing the students the opportunity to use technology to research further into the information that they learned today, as well as to clarify any questions that they may have. Allowing students to answer their own questions provides them with a life long skill of problem solving.
